I-80

Walcott, Iowa, July 2022

Headed west across fly-over land, I-80 crosses the Mississippi and opens up onto hundreds of flat miles of corn & beans. Outside Walcott Iowa (population 1,802) you'll find a super-sized example of Midwestern culture: I0wa-80 the World's Largest Truckstop. Its sprawling 220-acre compound inhabits a special brand of retro Americana and sells it back again. Inside the 6,200m2 interior you'll find clothing, art, food, truck parts, medical services and a curated narrative of a singular nation.  A more complicated story lies outside under the baking sun of a 900-trailer capacity parking lot. There you'll meet Christians and Sikhs, Southern gentlemen and East Coast fast talkers, and at least one Central American happy to switch into Spanish with you.

Special thanks to (and in order of appearance): Guri, James, Alexis, Brian, Thomas, Brett, Hopper the dog, Wes, Daniel, Frank and Phyliss for agreeing to appear in these photos.
